The Sudan is the largest country in Africa with total area of about 250 million hectares of which 84 million hectares are cultivatable and only 14.7 million hectares are currently utilized. The country enjoys a wide spectrum of climate and vast resource potential suitable for production of variety of food. The population is about 32 million in 2002 with an estimated annual growth rate of 2.7 percent. Some 80 percent of the population live in rural areas although the recent urban growth rate has been high and it is estimated that the number of displaced persons exceeds three millions.
