The Arab Center for Nutrition participated in planning, preparing, implementing and evaluating several nutrition education programmes in the Arab region. The most important programmes are summarized below:
- Food for Life The programme was prepared in cooperation and with support from Kellogg’s Middle East Company. The main objective of this programme was to promote healthy nutrition among primary school children in the Arab region.
- Al-Haraka Baraka The programme was prepared in cooperation and with support from the Masterfoods Company, and with technical assistance from the Physiological Laboratory at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia. The main objective of the programme was to promote physical activity in primary school children in the Arab region.
- Educational Booklets The Arab Center for Nutrition prepared several nutrition booklets to educate the public about various nutrition issues (see the list of publications for more information).
- Food Dome The Arab Center for Nutrition created the Food Dome. The Food Dome provides dietary guidelines for Arab people so as to reduce the risk of diet-related diseases, especially those related to non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, obesity and some types of cancer. The Food Dome is also a useful tool in the prevention of micronutrient deficiencies, especially iron-deficiency anemia. Studies in Arab countries indicate that food habits and changes in lifestyle are the most important factors responsible for diet-related diseases. Therefore, the choice of a healthy diet and regular physical activity are the main factors in the prevention of these diseases. In order to achieve and maintain a good state of health, individuals should consume sufficient quantities of a variety of different foods daily. The Food Dome provides a useful tool for the selection of appropriate quantities of food from the five food groups.
